Getting the Facts Straight

I knew when I got into this I would be doing a lot of research. I wanted answers to my questions and when those got answered three more questions would pop up. I keep a notebook with me to write down all my questions. It helps me to be organized and reminds me to go back to those questions and answer them as I continue my blog. My current tool is the Internet. It’s my information finder and it does a pretty darn good job. I’m hoping for better sources as I go along. I try to cross reference everything I find and double check the facts provided to ensure I am getting the right answers I’m looking for. I also know that I need reliable sources so I have to double check the websites I go to as well as the authors writing the articles. Yes, I agree, time consuming, but what is time when it’s for living a better life?

As I continue my reading, I’ll label each of my new posts regarding what I read from my books as chapters. Since I started my blog about a week and a half into the new year, I’ll officially start my detox on February 1st and begin documenting those posts as “Day 1” and so forth. This gives me time to recover from a sinus infection. I’ve been in and out these past few days and it has not been fun.

Well, cheers to a healthier and happier you and me!

Baby Steps

This blog came about because my original goal was to just live a healthier life through the foods I eat and the exercise I do. Five years ago, I started running at a park nearby my house. That was the extent of my exercise, but I was consistent with it. When my university built a recreation and wellness center about a year ago, I began going and working out with my friends. I slowly changed my eating habits such as eliminating fast foods and other junk that I knew were unhealthy. I also had subscribed to Self  and really enjoyed getting up-to-date with everything they had to offer to their readers. I was feeling good about myself for making this gradual change, until I came across an article in the magazine titled “Detoxify your life” written by Judi Ketteler.

I had to reassess everything. I went into a craze and began doing frantic research about the toxins that existed in my very own facial moisturizer. Even my sisters asked me what this thing was I was obsessing about. To clarify, I was totally not obsessing. I was just concerned. As I gathered information and began checking the ingredients that are listed as ones to avoid, I was horrified to find that every single product I used on a daily basis had an ingredient that is labeled as a carcinogen. Yes, that’s correct. Everything I had used from my chapstick to my shampoo. These toxins were being absorbed into my body and sadly, I was completely unaware. Terrible isn’t it?

That’s when I went on a search for books that would be able to help shed some light on these matters. I found two (the aforementioned Diet for a Poisoned Planet and The Safe Shopper’s Bible) and proceeded to purchase them off Amazon because Barnes & Noble did not carry them in-store. I’ll be using both to navigate my lifestyle change.

Everyone knows a change does not happen overnight and this detoxification definitely will take more time. It most certainly feels like a hopeless situation, but the solution is there. All I have to do is find it. One day at a time, right?
